This ‘N That

Labelingif you’re not happy with food ingredient labeling, and I don’t know of one celiac who is, write the FDA and your representatives in Washington. The FDA is currently considering three categories:

Source of plain English labeling (i.e. milk instead of whey)

Advisory Labeling (i.e. may contain gluten)

Ingredients exempt from declaration (i.e. common spices)

Paul from Mr. Ritt’s Bakery had an idea when he was at our Spring meeting. A few of us could combine our orders and split the shipping charges. Yet another way to save. Thanks, Paul!

Mr. Ritt’s will be moving next year to Millville, NJ (Route 47 and Vine Street). The really good news is that their new building is huge. This means they can hire more bakery staff, train more bakers, free up Ritt to do more research and development of more products plus open a g-f café/light fare restaurant.

So next summer if you’re traveling to the Jersey shore, you can stop and get a cup of coffee and piece of cake plus stock up on stuff on the way back. Their toll free number remains the same: 1-877-677-4887 or fax 215-627-5340. You can also locate them on the Web at MRRITTS.com

Did you get to taste their lemon poppy seed biscotti at our last meeting. Talk about heaven!

Each Spring I forget to mention that during Passover the dedicated aisle in your local supermarket can be a celiac’s best friend even if your not Jewish! The reason is labeling. The only ingredient you have to avoid is "matzo" (meal, flour, etc.) What a joy only having to look for one ingredient. The food tastes great too! Items like macaroons, potato soup, potato pancakes etc. Of course, if any of our Jewish friends know of a local Kosher grocery store please let us know.

One of our members (Sue Polachak) found one last year while traveling in Pomona, NY. During Passover she was able to get ice cream cones, sponge cake mix, jelly rolls, pound cakes, cookies, layer cakes, etc.

Don’t forget … Ener-G Foods has gluten free communion wafers. If Roman Catholic, best results are achieved by talking directly with your parish priest. Do NOT call or write the Archdiocese. They will refuse your request because the wafers do not contain wheat as required. Other denominations, of course, don’t have that problem.

Help! One of our members (Jane Small) loaned several tapes to the group. One very technical audio cassette concerning heredity, genes and celiac disease has been missing for quite a while. Ring a bell? Please check, and if you borrowed this tape bring it to the meeting so we can return it to Jane. If you can’t attend the meeting, let me know and I’ll send you a prepaid, pre-addressed, padded envelope. Thanks!

Buzz at the Spring meeting was about the Mydel ginger snaps and animal crackers (made with arrowroot) at Cheryl Abel’s Natural Choices Natural Food store. Everyone who tried them fell in love. I have not had an opportunity to try them yet (this low carb diet is no fun at all!) but wanted to make sure you heard about them if you were not at the last meeting.

Don’t forget to thank the vendors who supply samples at our meetings by purchasing their products. After all, where would we be without them!

Kathie
