Chairperson: Kathie Cavanagh : * www.celiacdisease.org Disclaimer: Purpose is to dispense information to our members and other interested parties. Intent is to assist in following a gluten-free diet. Ultimate responsibility is up to the individual, and this support group assumes no liability for its use. Sept. 29 Meeting
ur meeting will be on September 29 (Friday) and our guest speaker is Cindy Sunderland from Gluten Free 4 Me. She will speak about “The Survival Guide to Gluten Free Living” with realistic suggestions for making the gluten free life easier as well as providing an overview of a 30-60 day meal plan. Please note that the premise for her program does not require the purchase of any of her baked goods, but the establishment of a healthy perspective. Vendors who will also be in attendance are Mr. Ritt’s Paul (please see pre-order form enclosed) and Gluten Free 4 Me (you can also preorder from Cindy). Unfortunately, Grainless Baker did not sell enough to travel down to our meeting again. We appreciate Dan and Jan Trygar trying to accommodate us. Remember that these vendors are traveling a long way to be with us. If we don’t make it profitable for them to do so, we risk losing their attendance at our future meetings.
We also need to move to a new meeting site. The hospital began demolishing the front parking structure in July. The new parking structure will not be available for 18 months. I checked out many of your suggestions plus a few of my own. Price was the deciding factor (I had no idea that some places, even churches, charge such a huge fee to use their facilities). The 9/29 meeting will be held at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York, PA 17403. Instead of turning left on Rathton Road from Queen Street (Route 74) if going north, turn right. The Church is on the left just 3 streets from Route 74. It’s the next left (Broad Street) after Edgar Street and is only 0.25 miles from Route 74. Please don’t forget to bring something to the meeting for everyone to share along with at least two copies of the recipe (one goes to me and one stays with the item you bring for people to check ingredients in case they have allergies in addition to CD).
Previous Meeting
ur meeting last May with guest speaker Jax Peters Lowell, author of “Gluten Free Bible” and “No More Cupcakes and Tummy Aches” was great! Jax is a wonderful speaker and signed many books for our members. We even had to purchase additional books. There are just a few for sale at the next meeting and from Cheryl Abel at Natural Choices Natural Foods. Sarah Mitchell from our ROCK group supervised the children’s meeting and helped decorate cupcakes. Thanks, Sarah! Also, please check out the selection at Cheryl Abel’s Natural Choices (2241 Industrial Highway 840-8998). Cheryl is constantly adding new vendors and is a great resource for GF products and this support group. You can get your favorite Grainless Baker products there as well. Have your tried their hoagie rolls yet? Some of our members say they are to die for. In addition Cheryl will provide mixes at no charge to you so that you can make something to bring to the meeting for everyone to share. Did you get to sample all the products that Bonnie Martin got for our May meeting? There was tons of stuff and some of it was even hot! Thanks to you, Bonnie, and your sister for all your hard work. Report on May Dinner
he dinner at The International Peacock India Grill (2600 East Market Street, York, PA 17402, (717) 600-0013) was fantastic! This was the first time I had ever had Indian cuisine and I’m a convert. If you’ve never tried Peacock, please do. Not at all what I expected. Everything is not flavored with curry. Every item but two on their menu is gluten free. Yes, they had hot, but they also had mildly spicy flavored items. Their food is really good and reasonable. Just be careful … the papadum (lentil chips) are addictive! They even came to our May meeting and let us sample some of their delicious food. Thank you to Bill Polites for arranging this for us. We had a great time in a private room. Cool Whip Whip milk and pudding until thickened. Add lemon curd. Add Cool Whip. Layer fresh fruit and/or preserves with custard. I’ve also enclosed a mousse recipe that was in our local paper.
